Beth Murray came into Greenroom Gallery, last week. We had a chat about the feminine hygiene kit and about her trip to the Philippines in October. So I had the opportunity to ask a few questions.
When and why did you get involved with 'Days for Girls'?
A friend is involved and last year when I went to Fiji she gave me 15 kits to take over there. I also took over the pattern and waterproofing to an Australian friend who lives there so that she could get them made locally .
Tell us a bit about what you will do in the Philippines?
I will be visiting friends that I have known for over 12 years .
Nitz has been battling cancer for past four years and is now in remission . She is the Pastor of a small church and we visit people in the slum areas and take food etc .
Lani is involved in a ministry that is helping people to get set up with small self sustainable small businesses . For example raising pigs and small food stalls . Lani and Nitz are both looking at options as to how this project will best work out . For instance if they get volunteers eg church ladies to take it on and be a blessing to the woman in the rural provinces or as a micro business . These are the practicalities that I will be looking up when I am there in Oct .
What are the immediate needs for what you are about to set up over there?
The fabric for both the bags and shields can be purchased in the Philippines. It's the waterproofing and flannelette that needs to be taken from Australia . It would be good to still have money to purchase the 100% cotton for the shields in the Philippines when I am there.
Also finance to help set up some small business , as mentioned above . A breeding pair of pigs would cost approx $100 .
Do you have any other plans for the future?
In the new year I would like to go back and spend at least a few months overseeing the setting up of the businesses . The ministry over there is a registered not for profit INC and would partner with an Australian charity for accountability and tax deductions . I have been in discussion with a charity and just waiting for confirmation from the Board .
Thanks Beth for dropping in and hopefully we can raise some funds for you tomorrow night x Charlotte
